Klapac & Co. - The Beekeepers, located in Frederick, MD was established in 1973. In the early 1990's John received several grants to develop a new strain of honey bee based on a Yugoslavian strain, which has demonstrated resistance to mites that have threatened domestic honey bees since the early 1980's. In 1993, he was honored as one of three apiculturists to be asked by the USDA to introduce the new "Yugo bee" strain (ARS-Y-C-1) into the U.S. commercial beekeeping industry.
